My teaching approaches design as an exploratory process in which students gradually develop their own methods, questions and design position. Across different stages of study, I encourage them to explore how concept, form, material, making and context can inform one another, combining structured introductions to design methods and technologies with increasingly independent project development.
Teaching
I approach design as an open and exploratory process in which thinking and making continuously inform one another. Sketching, model-making, material experiments and prototypes allow ideas to be tested and developed through making. Students work with a broad range of materials and processes, from traditional craft techniques to CAD, 3D scanning and digital manufacturing, choosing and combining methods in response to their ideas rather than treating analogue and digital approaches as separate disciplines. Sustainability, material responsibility, seriality and production are recurring considerations throughout this process.
My own background in jewellery and applied design informs this approach, particularly an interest in the relationship between object, body and use, and in how designed objects can carry personal, cultural and social meaning. As students become more independent, my role increasingly shifts towards dialogue, critical feedback and supporting the development of an individual artistic and professional position.
The teaching formats presented here were developed within the Design Department at the Peter Behrens School of Arts, Hochschule Düsseldorf, ranging from introductory design and technology courses to project-based teaching, individual supervision and interdisciplinary collaborations. Alongside teaching, I established and led the 3D Scan & CAD Laboratory as a shared environment for teaching, experimentation and project development across the department.
